Christians: Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to be tortured and killed in order for us to have salvation?

Similarly, were people allowed to repent and be saved before Christ's death and resurrection (without sacrificial offerings, rituals, and so forth)? I am finding it a bit difficult to understand the fundamentals here so I would really appreciate a scripture-based answer. Thanks.
